Saftey and Information Sheet

Lithium batteries are powerful and efficient, but they require careful handling to ensure safety. While they are generally safe when used correctly, mishandling can lead to risks, including fire, property damage, or even serious injury and or death. To help you use your battery safely and effectively, we've provided detailed guidelines below. We strongly encourage you to follow these recommendations and to also consider appropriate insurance coverage. It's crucial that these guidelines are adhered to for your safety and the optimal performance of your product, we take no responsibility if the product is misused, and the guidelines not followed.

  • Lithium batteries should be stored in a fire-resistant storage cabinet in a well-ventilated, and cool place well away from other flammable and combustible materials.
  • Do not modify or attempt to repair your e-vehicle battery.
  • Charging precautions:
    • Never charge an e-vehicle battery overnight or unattended. Never leave it plugged in when it is not charging.
    • Avoid charging or storing your e-vehicle battery in extreme temperatures.
    • Only use the original manufacturer provided equipment to charge your e-vehicle battery.
  • In case of fire:
    • Keep a Class D (powder) extinguisher nearby, and/or dry sand, as in the event of a fire, it should be smothered with dry sand or covered with contents from a Class “D” fire extinguisher. The use of a Class “D” (powder) fire extinguisher is the preferred extinguishing method.
    • For any fire protection requirements, see Lithium Battery Fire Extinguishers.
  • Handle your e-vehicle battery with care. Do not drop the battery or submerge it in water.
  • JSH Battery endorses the recommendations of the Fire Chiefs’ Council on lithium battery safety: Fire Safety Guidance.
  • Human Powered Solutions:
    • From the USA has proposed a cycle industry specific best practice document detailing storage, charging and handling procedures, for retailers who wish to minimize risks by using a secure battery store.
    • It is a free download here: Safe Lithium-ion Battery Storage and Charging Procedures.
  • Battery damage precautions:
    • Batteries can be damaged by dropping them or crashing your e-vehicle. Where the battery is damaged, it can overheat and catch fire without warning or even hours after the incident/problem occurred.
    • Check your battery regularly for any signs of damage and if you suspect it is damaged it should be replaced and should not be used or charged.
    • If your battery pack gets damaged, in any way, store it OUTSIDE in a dry place, away from your property and flammable materials then seek advice.

Best Practice

  • Do not force the battery lid down (it is purposely a tight fit due to complaints ofthe battery being loose in the bike) it will find its own level. If it doesn't, you can also heat the bike plastic bottom cradle with a heat gun for a few minutes, then slide your battery in for the best fit. A lid riser kit is provided with the battery.
  • Please ensure when fitting the battery and during maintenance, clean the bike and battery connections with Isopropyl alcohol and a cotton wool pad.
  • Do not clean your bike with the battery still inside.
  • The battery is damp cloth clean only – Do not jet or hose wash.
  • When connecting and disconnecting the battery, make sure the breaker is off, if you have one and/or the battery is turned off.
  • When not in use, keep your battery at 50-60% for maximum battery life.
  • Never store your battery at less than 20%, especially after a ride when it's cold outside.
  • Only use the bike's standard charger or the charger that was provided with the battery from JSH Battery.
  • When reconnecting the battery make sure the plugs are dry and clean.
  • When charging, please ensure the battery is turned on.
  • The percent gauge is for reference only.
  • When carrying/removing the battery from the bike, make sure your hand is under all of the straps.
